Transitions
Transitions at Bellaire Primary School
At Bellaire Primary School, we understand that transitions are significant milestones in every child’s educational journey. Whether your child is starting school for the first time, moving between year levels, or transitioning to secondary school, our goal is to make these changes as smooth and positive as possible.
Starting School: The Foundation Year
We know that starting school is a big step, and we’re here to support your child every step of the way. Our transition-to-school program includes:
Orientation Sessions: These sessions help children become familiar with our school environment, meet their teachers, and make new friends.
Parent Information Evening: This event provides families with key information about routines, expectations, and strategies to support children during this transition.
Buddy Program: Each Foundation student is paired with an older buddy (or sometimes multiple buddies) who provides guidance and friendship during the first year.
Year-Level Transitions
Moving to a new year level can bring excitement and new challenges. To ensure a smooth transition:
Meet the Teacher Sessions: Students have the opportunity to meet their teacher for the upcoming year and learn about their new classroom environment.
Step-Up Program: Students participate in activities designed to prepare them for the expectations and routines of the next year level.
Parent Communication: We keep families informed with tips and strategies to help their children adapt to new learning environments.
Transition to Secondary School
The move to secondary school is an important milestone. We work closely with local secondary schools to ensure our students feel prepared and confident. Our secondary transition includes:
Information Sharing: Representatives from local secondary schools contact Bellaire to share details about their programs.
Orientation Days: Students participate in orientation days at their future schools to get a sense of the new environment.
Transition Support Groups: At times, we provide additional support to students who may feel anxious about this change.
Support for All Students
We recognise that transitions can be challenging for some students. At Bellaire, we:
Individualised Support: For students who need additional assistance, our staff work closely with families to develop tailored support.
Wellbeing: Our SWPBS framework promotes resilience, respect, and kindness, ensuring students feel supported during transitions.
Open Communication: We encourage families to share concerns with us so we can address them promptly and collaboratively.
A Shared Responsibility
Successful transitions are a team effort. At Bellaire Primary School, we work hand-in-hand with students, families, and the wider community to ensure every child feels supported, valued, and ready for the next step in their educational journey.
